Pinecrest Gardens is dedicated to improving our living collections for purposes of understanding and appreciating the horticultural significance of South Florida. By preserving botanical information, the Gardens can develop and manage the landscape for an exceptional visitor experience. Some collections can become accredited and recognized on a national scale through the Plant Collections Network. These collections are intentionally organized and acquired for purposes of contributing directly to the organizations mission. Pinecrest Gardens is determined to highlight the Garden Croton collection as priority to care for and develop as a long-term commitment to the historical horticultural practices of South Florida.
For a collection to be recognized, certain qualifications must be met. Pinecrest Gardens has Level II Accreditation by the Arboretum Accreditation Program and is currently working to gather documentation for our institutional Codiaeum variegatum collection. More than 240 specimens have been accessioned, with over 50 Garden Croton varieties identified on the campus. Several varieties of our croton collection can be viewed virtually on our public Hortis database. Many of these varieties are also on display throughout the Gardens in almost all areas of the walking paths.
