Trombonist and bandleader Delfaeyo Marsalis (of the famed NEA Jazz Master family) visits us from New Orleans for his first headlining performance at Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens. His hard-swinging Uptown Jazz Orchestra is a mainstay in New Orleans jazz clubs like Snug Harbor. The UJO is a big band that emphasizes groove, riff playing, and the polyphonic improvisation of the New Orleans jazz tradition. The vast majority of the musicians are Louisiana natives, and they range from extremely talented young students to respected jazz veterans, continuing the long jazz tradition of onstage apprenticeship. UJO shows are always a good time, and the band’s soulful soloists get audiences cheering throughout the set.
Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor”…he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” its Kidstown After School in three New Orleans grammar schools in 2009. He has composed over 80 songs that help introduce kids to jazz.
A performance by the Uptown Jazz Orchestra is a traveling street parade in the grand tradition of its hometown celebrations, from Mardi Gras to the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Front man and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis brings the essence of that heritage wherever he and the 15-piece band roam.
