The Mangrove Forest was planted in conjunction with the installation of artist Xavier Cortada's Pinecrest Mangrove Forest: Plan(T) for the Future mural. A pedestrian path winds through marsh grasses and a planting of the three native mangroves, important species that provide critical habitat and storm protection. The thematic installation represents rising sea levels and the inundation of coastal South Florida. These mangroves are the first upland forest planting of trees that will be colonizing the area in the not-too-distant future.
